Bought a D-Link DSL-2640B Wireless Router which was a treat to set up and initially worked well on my laptop.

However my iMac G5 with OS X only worked with certain websites – other simply wouldn’t load.

D-Link tech support couldn’t wait to put the phone down when I said I had a Mac, so after a bit of research I found a common problem is the MTU, or Maximum Transmission Unit, which is something to do with the amount of data a website sends a receives and how much your computer is set to send receive.

Most tech tips tell you to reduce this to 1492, which my router was already set at, so clearly I had to do this on the Mac.

A utility called Cocktail is a way to set MTU on the Mac if you don’t want to hack around in Terminal – it creates a file which sets the MTU each time the Mac is rebooted.

…now seems to be working a treat.
