E-Learning Guidelines Document

I wrote the NCSL E Learning Guidelines: Technical and Design Specification document whilst working at NCSL, to improve standards and consistency of commissioned online materials.

This document is designed for suppliers of e-learning to understand the technical requirements for creation, testing and integration of e-learning units into NCSL’s Learning Gateway. It is assumed that the audience is familiar with e-learning, SCORM standards  and associated terminology. This document indicates NCSL’s preferred approach to e-learning creation and any deviations from these guidelines should be discussed with the NCSL.

The E-Learning guidelines focusses on the technical design aspects (rather than instructional design) including

  1. Visual style the visual appearance of the materials including the use of type and colour and the scale, consistency and composition of the elements on the screen
  2. Usability the ease and speed with which targeted users can achieve the goals that the designer of the materials had intended, the level of intuitiveness and clarity to any interaction or interface that may be present
  3. Accessibility the extent to which anyone, regardless of any disability, can effectively use a website via any web browsing technology including specialist assistive technologies (e.g. ?screen readers?)

Having Googled this subject, there's not a massive amount of practical guidelines for building a good E-Learning course, so I thought I'd throw this out into the WWW and see the response.
